How to open an auto repair shop in Ecuador: requirements, permits and first steps

For: Mechanics opening their own repair shop, quick lube or tire shop in Ecuador · Updated October 28, 2026

Short answer

To open an auto repair shop in Ecuador you need, in this order: confirm the premises allow the activity (land use), register your RUC with the SRI, get the fire department permit and the municipal license (in Quito everything is bundled into the LUAE), register as a hazardous-waste generator for used oil, and get an electronic signature to invoice. Your municipality sets the exact requirements, so confirm them with your canton's GAD before signing the lease.

1. Before you rent: check the land use

Not every space can host a repair shop: municipalities define the zones where vehicle repair is allowed. Ask for the land-use certificate or report (in Quito, the ICUS) for the address before signing. If it comes back negative, that space won't work no matter how good the rent is.

Also make sure there's room to take vehicles in without using the sidewalk: it's one of the most common reasons for fines and closures.

2. The permits, step by step

  1. RUC with the SRI under vehicle maintenance and repair. As an individual you usually start under the RIMPE regime; confirm your regime with the SRI.
  2. Fire department operating permit: current extinguishers, signage, safe wiring and a proper place for fuel and oil.
  3. Municipal license (patente), or the LUAE in Quito, which bundles the license, fire department and other inspections into one process. They usually ask for your ID, RUC, land-use approval and the fire permit.
  4. Registration as a hazardous-waste generator with the environmental authority: used oil, filters and oily rags must go to an authorized waste handler who gives you a receipt.
  5. If you hire staff, IESS social security enrollment from day one.
  6. Shop sign: some municipalities charge for it or regulate it separately.

3. E-invoicing from day one

  • All invoices are electronic: you need an electronic signature (.p12 file), around US$20–35 a year.
  • You request issuing authorization in SRI en Línea, first in the test environment and then in production.
  • You can invoice for free with the SRI's own tool, but each invoice is a separate form: it doesn't keep customers, inventory or the work order.
  • Shop software issues the invoice from the work order itself and sends it to the customer by email and WhatsApp.

4. Minimum equipment to start

  • A lift or ramp, jack and stands, an air compressor and a full set of hand tools.
  • An OBD2 diagnostic scanner: almost every job starts there now.
  • Containers for used oil and a separate waste area.
  • Extinguishers and a first-aid kit (the inspection will ask for them).
  • A phone with WhatsApp just for the shop: that's where customers will reach you.

5. Get organized before your first customer

Shops that grow have three habits from the start: they check every vehicle in with photos and the customer's signature, they send the quote in writing before working, and they remind customers of their next service. Doing it from day one is far easier than moving from a notebook to software once you have a hundred customers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to open an auto repair shop in Ecuador?

It depends mostly on the space and equipment. Municipal and fire permits vary by canton (Quito's fire inspection for the LUAE is free); the electronic signature is about US$20–35 a year. The biggest costs are usually the lift, the scanner and the rent deposit.

Can I open a repair shop at home?

Only if your address's land use allows it and you have room for vehicles off the street. Get the land-use certificate before investing.

What do I do with used oil?

Store it in closed containers and hand it to an authorized environmental waste handler, who gives you a receipt. Dumping it down the drain or on the ground is an environmental violation.

Do I need to invoice from the first customer?

Yes, with an active RUC you must issue electronic invoices. That's why you should have the electronic signature and SRI authorization before opening.
